The Jazz Singer

beyfrank1One of the best sounds to come out of Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood is the new CD released by Frank Bey and his band, “Blues in the Pocket.” Frank Bey is an oft-overlooked blues musician originally from Georgia who played with Otis Redding in the 60′s and has been hard at work on his music since 1997. Those who believe the blues belong to a byegone era should to listen to this CD, which came out September 2007. Produced by Jeff Monjak, who along with Bey recorded some of the songs in his Northern Liberties loft, the CD combines both old and new sounds to produce a must-hear experience.

The majority of the songs are written by Bey or Monjack. The tracks incorporate classic sounds with contemporary lyrics (E.g. “When the blues come knockin’/Check your caller ID” on Track 2). The CD also covers some classics, for example “A Change is Gonna Come,”which was also done by Sam Cooke . One of the most exciting tracks is the last one on the CD, Track 12, “New Kinda Blues” which incorporates a local rapper as well as gospel singers. Personally, I felt that track could have been extended, it was way too short for listeners to be able to appreciate it’s diverse influences. Nevertheless this CD has been in my car since its release in September. My favorite track is Track 11, “Dock of the Bay.”

Bey has a fantastic sound. If you enjoy Sam Cooke or Ben E. King, Bey and his group are worth listening to. Also, you get the pleasure of supporting local music.
