And other musings for today.
So I’m starting to wonder. What’s with all the Philly bloggers with legal careers? There’s David Snyder, lawyer by day, food critic Philafoodie by blogname. And of course our very own Mithras, who is our favorite mostly because he comments on PG :) There was also Ali Eteraz, who’s given up on the blogging game. And of course PhillyChitChat, who’s a paralegal. Coincidence or correlation? You decide.
And on to other news.
Being a Paki, everyone wants to know my opinion on this whole Prince Harry calling little Ahmed a Paki business? Hmmm. I didn’t grow up in the U.K. The term “Paki” doesn’t hold the same connotations for me as it would for someone somewhere else. In fact, I tend to make a lot of Paki jokes myself, mostly because I like how it rhymes with “wacky” and “tacky.” I also have a rather strong crush on Prince Harry, whose red hair always set my heart a-flamin’.
Which isn’t to say what he said was insensitive. It probably was, I’m not British. I’ve never really been singled out because of my ethnicity. (Mostly because everyone just assumes I’m Indian/Hispanic.) But I’m told it’s incredibly hurtful, akin to the n-word in America. Should he know better? Probably. Does he know better? Probably. Given the nasty race riots between Asians and Britians that occured in Oldham, in the northern part of England, in 2001, it wasn’t a wise decision. Either way, he has a lot of growing up to do. I’d hate to be in his shoes. (Who does his PR???) I had to laugh at his comments about his grandmother, though. (“God Save You.”)
LOL @ u rhyming it with wacky and tacky…
and don’t worry i hope to have a series of illegal careers which i’ll blog about.
OMG, you and I? *arelikethis* I kind of have a small thing for Prince Harry. You have a big thing, I’ve considered him the good looking prince for years now.
In the U.S, we (the desis) use it pretty freely. But he knew exactly what he was saying. It is a big slur against South Asians over there. Which also reminds me, ever watch Goodness Gracious Me? You should youtube it. There are a few Paki skits from them.
Which brings me to the idiots in the U.S. press:
Paki is a slur in the U.K. for South Asians in general, not just Pakistanis. The U.S. reports somehow missed that and assumed it was specific to Pakistanis. As well as ragheads, that would be for again South Asians as well as Middle Easterners.
And to end it all,
Congrats on starting your path to becoming an Esquire–in Amerian English, of course :)
P.S. when I mean “Paki skits”
I mean, skits about the Brits calling the Asian characters Pakis in the end, no matter how hard they tried to be un-Asian.
Congrats on law school! You’ll do well; jounalists always dominate on law school exams. What school are you attending?
Temple Law!
