As much as I love Laura Bush…

83306963CC398_Barack_Obama_Who is admittedly quite the classy former first lady, I do love Michelle Obama with all my heart. Just wanted to clarify that before I join the bandwagon of blogger who aren’t exactly, um, fans of the First Lady’s fashion sense. (And yes, I do realize how petty that sounds in the historical context of things.) But my first feeling upon seeing that red and black Narciso Rodriguez ensemble was disappointment (after the tears of joy over the election results of course). How a gorgeous, sexy woman like Michelle can keep on picking all the wrong outfits is beyond me. Bold is good. It’s unforgettable.  But a solid palette embellished with gorgeous accessories was working so well for her! Why change a proven formula?

Today’s gold was a good color, but the cut of the coat ( as well as all of its fussy pieces) detracted from the close-fit of the dress. (Teal shoes? TEAL SHOES?!?) Compare her outfit with Jill Biden (whose shoes were a little too sex-kitten, but whatev), or even Laura Bush. Both looked smart in their tailored pieces, while poor Michelle managed to look bright, but slightly dowdy. Why the cover-up? z21

Two bad choices, okay. But hey, what do I know? I wear white socks with black trousers. But tonight’s inauguaral ball gown really clinched it for me. I know, I’m really really sorry guys. I know we all imagine Jackie O somewhere in heaven, her spirit beaming down on Ms. O. Not gonna be the case with this organza-ish number, which honestly looks like a rather terrible pom-pom’ed curtain my mom once hung up. The one-shouldered strap invokes Tarzan. Or maybe a Southern debunte cupcake dress gone wrong. No shape. Totally unflattering. (Seriously, if there’s an Obama #5 on the way, they just need to throw out a press release. We’re gonna figure it out eventually.)

I’ve heard it said before that unlike the infamous Sarah Palin, Ms. O does not employ a stylist. But you’re the First Lady now! Surely you have a sister, mother or gf that can tell you what looks good!

  1. I do love her classy style! Especially that one-shoulder white dress!

  2. I heard Jason Wu interviewed around midnight of the inauguration on CNN–I thought that he was earnest but felt somewhat sorry for him. Honestly, nothing about that gown worked, though it’s a lovely idea to encourage a young designer of color, etc.
