To the family of Central High School alum and Dickinson College undergrad Nate Kirkland, who bury a beloved son and brother on Saturday morning. The 20-year old was part of a group volunteering to help hurricane victims in Guatemala when he drowned.
Here’s more from the Inquirer:
Kirkland, along with other students and staff on the trip, had gone to swim at a beach overseen by lifeguards on Saturday afternoon after their work was done, school officials said. “While all details are not yet available, we do know that as the group made its way out of the water and onto the shore, Nate was not among them,” Dickinson president William G. Durden wrote in an e-mail to students, faculty and staff on Sunday afternoon. A search ensued, and Kirkland’s body later was found on the beach by authorities, said Christine M. Dugan, a Dickinson spokeswoman.
On a personal note, my little brother graduated with Nate and describes him as a warm, wonderful human being who was thoughtful to friend and strangers alike. Last count has more than 1,300 members of the Facebook group R.I.P. Nate Kirkland.
Memorial services for Nate will be held tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 23 @ 5pm. The location is 1724 Arch St., Philadelphia (corner of 18th & Arch St.). The name of the church is Arch Street Presbyterian.
The funeral is Saturday, January 24, @10AM, held at Mt. Moriah Pentecostal Church, 7909 Stenton Avenue. Continue reading →
