Who could fire Fred Sherrrrrrrman????

z11I don’t see how the geniuses at KYW 1060 AM could justify the firing of iconic radio commentator Fred Sherman? Especially after he offered to work for free! As a young kid, Fred Sherman’s voice was the only thing I associated with Philadelphia. Well, that and sidewalks. I wonder if KYW did any research on how many people listen to KYW only to listen to Sherman’s insightful, and always humorous analyses. News radio stations are usually so generic.  He livens up their entire format.

I say “SAVE FRED SHERMAN IN 2009″!

Sex-based discrimination in classrooms

Is not a surprise. Male professors do tend to favor pretty girls :) But I was interested in this piece posted on the blog  Overheard in Philly yesterday morning.  I wonder if anyone at Drexel Law ever read it?

Tenure and Senility Are A Winning Combination

Male professor, possibly age 75

Professor to attractive female student: “My you are beautiful and I do love your hair like that. Listen class, I am partial to girls. Women are here to look pretty. A girl should take care of herself and get dressed and do her hair–especially for my class. If you want an A in my course, you’re a girl, and you read the assigned chapters before class.”

Professor continues to flirt with everything that moves and has breasts.

* Let’s see if the department chair…or any Drexel Profs…read this blog. Seriously, if this is true it’s time for Professor Happy to move to the farm in the country.

I hate hate hate

How women are depicted as hysterical, calorie-counting, sugar-obsessed maniacs in this commerical for Nabisco’s 100 calorie mini-Oreo cakesters. For every Dove revolution video, there’s ten of these commercials on television. Do everyone a favor, Nabisco and give women some credit. Not eating any of this crap any time soon.

As much as I love Laura Bush…

83306963CC398_Barack_Obama_Who is admittedly quite the classy former first lady, I do love Michelle Obama with all my heart. Just wanted to clarify that before I join the bandwagon of blogger who aren’t exactly, um, fans of the First Lady’s fashion sense. (And yes, I do realize how petty that sounds in the historical context of things.) But my first feeling upon seeing that red and black Narciso Rodriguez ensemble was disappointment (after the tears of joy over the election results of course). How a gorgeous, sexy woman like Michelle can keep on picking all the wrong outfits is beyond me. Bold is good. It’s unforgettable.  But a solid palette embellished with gorgeous accessories was working so well for her! Why change a proven formula? Continue reading

Only 24 days till Valentine’s Day

z112I came across the perfect Valentine’s Day event for a certain someone and their sweetheart. (*Hint, hint, cough, cough.) But all of you are welcome to come along.

The Blue Cross River Rink is holding a Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Skate
February 14, 8:30 – 10:30 PM. Tickets are $15 and will be available in advance, includes DJ entertainment and keepsakes
Tickets on sale January 20

Sounds ideal. Now if only the folks at the River Rink could buy me some perfume and shower me with chocolates, everything would be perfect.

Reppin’ Philly Shyamalan-style

z111Ever wanted to be in a movie? Now’s your chance. Thanks to Temple’s Chris Stover for posting this.

May I have some Urdu, please?

z1So how hard can it be for a girl to learn her native language, you ask?  Quite difficult, as I found out this past week. Here’s the deal. I really, really, really want to learn to read/write/speak Urdu. More speak, the writing/reading I could care less about.  I want to learn it for my own reasons, but learning Urdu couldn’t hurt if I ever wanted to work for the FBI.  (“The Philadelphia Division is actively looking for Albanian, Urdu, and Farsi speakers.”) Problem is, my parents are too busy to teach me and local class offerings on Urdu are almost nonexistent. I could go the book/online route, but I’m more of a class person. I ran into couple of dead ends before finding an Urdu course offered at UPenn. Then I found out that registering to audit a course for no credit cost the equivalent of $2400. Insanity! I might as well refresh my French for $165 via Temple’s Center City courses. Ugh. One more reason to hate UPenn.

I <3 Libraries (On Being a Dork)

dscn12291When I was six years old, my mother took me to the library in Vineland, New Jersey. She pointed me to a stack of Hardy Boy books and said, “Pick five. ” That started my love affair with libraries. (Throughout my childhood, I have had a recurring fantasy of being accidentally locked in a library overnight. There’s something about being surrounded by bookshelves that really gets me going.)
