Wifebeaters

z6I have tried (half-heartedly) to join some sort of program that helps women in domestic abuse situations for the better part of the year. Continue reading

Don’t think and drive

So if you think, that like any normal city – Philadephia actually clears the ice from its major arterial thorughfates, you’re highly mistaken. I found this out a bit too late last night when (along with 5 other cars) I found my car careening wildly out of control on 30th and JFK last evening around 7:30. So next time it snows, don’t think the roads will be clear after one full day, ladies and gentlemen. Don’t think, just SEPTA it.

1) Calmly driving at around 20 miles an hour.

More girly bashing + Bride Wars

THE MAC AIDS FUND FERGIESpeaking of website design, I can’t resist bashing the MAC AIDS FUND website, featuring Fergie as a former spokesperson. Continue reading

THAT made me feel safe

So I thought it would be fun to visit the PHILA.GOV website today, the City of Philadelphia’s official website. Imagine how delighted I was to realize I could sign up for traffic text message alerts in case someone (*coughs “Nutter”) forgets to take the ice off major thoroughfares (more on this later), and I find my car sliding off the road at 30th and JFK (more on this later). So I go on the website, which is fairly easy enough to navigate (finally).

But when you scroll down the screen, you reach this. Whaddya know? Wally Wise Guy. (I almost fell off my chair, laughing.) Continue reading

Weekly Roundup

First things first:

It’s never too cold to attend First Friday events. Check out Jen Roder and the gang at Bambi and Germ Bookstore from 6-9 tomorrow night on Frankford Ave. There’ll be beer, music and art. Whatmoredoyawant?

Secondly: Mithras, forget minorities. Where are the women in Drinking Liberally? (Just curious.) I guess women and politics don’t mix. I should just stay home and work on my cross-stitching.

Third: PW, watch out! Those CP folks know where they should be getting their feedback. Readers. Am I right Phillybits? [Although I loved PW's story on Women's Against Abuse so much, I joined the (prolly) 5,000+ women who now want to volunteer there. But the original Mz. Fierece, Jazmine Sullivan is awesome too, Drew.]

Fourth: Bash your ex in public with the Raven Society’s Slammin’ Love: A V-Day Story Slam from 5-8 at Fergie’s Pub, Tuesday, February 10th. (Tell your best true story about love in 5 to 7 minutes (sans notes of course). Awesome 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes! Sign-ups will open at 5pm at Fergie’s: slam will begin at 6pm. Limited slam slots available: first come, first serve. There will be drink specials and appetizers so bring your friends!)

Then kiss and make up, here!

25 Random Things about PG

z1Number one: You can now follow me on Twitter. Yay!

So everyone’s doing this whole “random things about me” crap. In the last few weeks, I’ve been bombarded with posts from friends who enjoy sharing their eccentricities. (I love it.) Interesting article about this in today’s NY Times.

“The latest digital fad — a chain-letter-cum-literary exercise called “25 Random Things About Me” — is threatening to consume what little remaining free time and privacy we have.”

I’m always tempted to post something incredibly zany, like “When I was ten, I beat a man to death with a Manolo Blahnik.” or “Sometimes I like to eat paper when I’m hungry.” Yummm.

Everybody join this Fb group NOW – UPDATED

z1

In from my friend, Rajan, who created a Fb group he calls “Michael Phelps & his Bong.”

The program descrip reads:

“For anyone who thinks that a gold medalist has the right to smoke a little bud on his break..”

Amen to that, Rajan. Amen to that. Join the group NOW.

I mean this poor kid got like 5 zillion medals. Give’m a break.

UPDATED

Are you kidding me???? Seriously? This kid practically re-invented the sport.

Michael Phelps was suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe. The sport’s national governing body also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period, effective Thursday.“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado-based federation said in a statement.

Okay. That’s it. I’m moving to the Netherlands! But come-on, let’s get real.

The article says, “Now, he won’t be able to allowed to compete until early May, which would give him just over two months to get in some racing before July’s world championships in Rome.

But he doesn’t need the sport. The sport needs him. Anyone?
