…after reading this on UWISHUNU.
Are you a tree-lover? Do you spend summer days lounging under a leafy oak at Rittenhouse Square? Do you wish your own neighborhood had more greenery? (I know I do.) Well, now your block can have its own tree!
From now until Friday, March 27th, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is offering interested homeowners their very own street tree! “But my block is surrounded by cement sidewalks!” you protest. Relax. If you are approved for a tree, the City of Philadelphia removes any sidewalk block that needs to be removed for FREE.
But nobody on my block’s cooperating.
Excuses I heard:
“Well if I get a tree, the kids in the neighborhood are just going to mess it up.”
“Nobody will water it, it’ll die anyway.”
“What’s the point?”
“Trees will mess up our sidewalk.”
“Nobody cleans up the street anyway, this’ll just cause more trash.”
Encouragement I heard:
“I want a tree, trees clean up the air!”
“I really want a tree, it’ll be great for the kids.”
But so far, nobody’s signed up. I should nag more. Maybe community activists are just people who know how to nag effectively. I wonder if Obama was a good nagger.
well it’s easy to talk on a subject, taking action means taking responsibility and heaven forbid anyone takes responsibility for their convictions. we live in a society where the finger needs to be pointed at someone else, never ourselves. People suck
