I love bacon too

I really really do. Bacon is a staple of my diet.

*Drools.

But there’s no way Padma Lakshmi really eats this crap. I mean, I do. Every week. But supermodels don’t. Oh wait, wannabe supermodel (snark). But seriously, isn’t it a little irresponsible for a “chef” to promote fast food. I mean, Rachael Ray did it, but still…..coffee is coffee. If that was crack for kids, what’s a bacon cheeseburger?

(Phillygrrl does not any point endorse the eating of bacon cheeseburgers on her website. Certainly more young kids follow the example of Padma Lakshmi than P.G. Kthxbye.)

Besides, wasn’t she a vegetarian? Poor kid, she totally rebelled. (FYI, I stole this from Sepia Mutiny. Check out their post on P.L.) Of course, seeing as I’m a huge Salman Rushdie fan, I still have a few sour grapes when it comes to this carnivore.

I’m guessing I don’t look that sexy when I ravage my Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger on the subway. Speaking of which, I haven’t seen a Hardee’s since I was six. Maybe one in like, Delaware somewhere on some road trip. Anyone else? I could’ve sworn it was a franchise that died out. Only to be revitalized by Lakshmi!

Buy your Plushgun here!

And support your local record store.  I love this place! The Marvelous! Records, LP’s, etc on the block between 40th & Spruce and 40th and Walnut. Fun browsing for hours. I seem to remember them having comics as well. And they’re nice too. They may be indie music snobs, but they’re nice indie music snobs. (As in they explained what an LP and an EP were to me. Without laughing. They’re really that nice.)

So if you don’t feel like sitting at your computer, and ordering from here, you can just bike to West Philly and order a real, live Plushgun CD from The Marvelous. Viva la Plushgun! Cheers!

Can Comcast be Cool?

z113

I’ve hesitated commenting on this whole Comcast blog deal for a bit. I find it all…a bit complicated. (Love a company for stabilizing Philadelphia’s economy, or hate it on principal? Puzzling.)

My Comcastic friends have been telling me quite a bit about this whole Comcast Voices blog, which features Scott McNulty as “chief blogger.”

I still remember the hubbub at Comcast when Bob Garfield made the blog “ComcastMustDie.” A nightmare for the company. But a great wake-up call. Certainly it did more good than harm.

“As both The New York Times and Washington Post have recently reported, the company has heard our angry voices and taken concrete steps in the process of putting customers first. Meantime, it has used ComcastMustDie to specifically resolve many hundreds of customer complaints. There is a long way for Comcast to go, but there is also no question that it has been forced by us to reckon with us. Now we will employ the same formula to other serial customer-abusers.”

However, countering a blog with a corporate blog? I’m still a little confused. Blogging as corporate marketing strategy just seems to fly  in the face of all that is bloggy and holy. Continue reading

Events/Events/Events

Just FYI, folks. I have no problem promoting events that I will be going to, my friends ask me to, etc.

But don’t forget to hit up City Paper and UWISHUNU. They are the local events masters.

Philadelphia City Paper. Hit ‘em up here. But send it to them 10 days in advance of the event.

UWISHUNU. Send ‘em an email.

Do I want arbritarily spaced trees on my block?

Yes!

For a bit I was bummed about the fact that I couldn’t get six on each side of the street, all evenly spaced and purty. But oh well, some random trees are better than no trees at all. Right? I shouldn’t punish those who want them :) Ah, but I had such a nice little urban planning design in my head. And some tree planting party ideas!

Where’s the team work?

RF4474933

Guest blogger/regular TB is angry again. This time, it’s about video games…..

Why is there a lack of co-op games lately? It’s really getting on my nerves. I was in a game store with my cousin the other day searching for a game that we both could play together besides Gears of War. Whatever happened to the old games from Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis? Does anyone remember Streets of Rage, Double Dragon or the old Ninja Turtle games? It seems as though game developers forgot how to make good games where you can team up with your buddies and take on baddies together on one screen. Now it’s “2 – 4 players online”. WHAT THE F*CK? Ok, there are 4 ports on the goddamn console for 4 goddamn controllers. Can I please have a goddamn 4 player game? And I’m not talking about some FPS (First Person Shooter), I want a simple side scroller game with the camera at a tilted ariel view.

After about almost an hour of searching, my eyes came across a box that said Ninja Turtles. FINALLY! Or so I thought. I looked in the back of the box only to find that this game was a single player game. That really pissed me off considering the fact that there’s 4 f*ckin turtles (which would also make sense since there’s 4 ports on the console). I mean seriously, is it supposed to be this difficult? Every game that we picked up looked like something that would be suitable for more than one player. Pictures of Vikings slaughtering monsters and soldiers shooting aliens, but none of them offered co-op. Continue reading

So where are they?

Someone should start a newspaper to report on newspapers. (Please, no Brian Tierney jokes.)

Ever since I was a wee little intern at a certain alt-weekly here in Philly, I’ve wanted to get my hands on stats that tell me the racial makeup of newsrooms of local papers. (Yes, I was the lone raisin floating in a sea of oatmeal. It’s all good. No worries. I can handle it ;) ). Continue reading
