I keep forgetting about Trinidad

And how the music there is amazing.

Rewind back to high school. I met my first “Indian” friend in ninth grade. We bonded over a love of cheese fries and Shahrukh Khan. We’re still friends, I was just a bridesmaid in her wedding. But it was at her wedding that I was reminded how unique and amazing Trinidadian culture is. Her family came from India to Trinidad. The hybrid of Trini and Indian cultures = chutney pop. I first heard it at her wedding reception. Awesomeness. Bollywood lyrics + soca beats = fun times. And a couple of island coolers and you’re in for a party.

So yesterday while driving, I came across this song while scanning radio stations.

Here’s the original (and no, I don’t know why Ranbir is flashing everyone):

And here is the Triny chutney pop version Jep Sting featuring Andy Singh and Ahil Bheem. Go to Bollywood, guys! They’ve gotta put this remix in a music video.

UPDATE:

Just found the video. Also realized the song is called “Jep Sting Naina.” Somebody interpret that for me. Trini dialect is so confusing to me.

Check out this post:

“Anyway, I am SICK of people asking me why I didn’t continue with a career in hair.  This question is usually followed by a question about what I am majoring in now.  Which is then followed by, “What are you going to do with an Environmental Science degree?”.  I’m sick of answering this question. I’m going to start telling people that I plan on becoming a dump truck driver when I graduate college. “

I love Bumble’s writing. Read more.

I love my church

Especially when we do things like this. (Jesus <3s people who shamelessly plug their friends’ events, FYI.)

My good friend, Josh Blakesley is going to be there with some awesome seminars. Good stuff. Worth going to.

Forget IKEA. Go to Uhuru & Collectibles.

z12

So everyone has been telling me to go to IKEA. For furniture and the ilk. Good thing I didn’t listen to them.

Nope. No sireee. Perhaps every poor yuppie thinks they should IKEA out their place. Then I calculated the cost of getting a bed, bookshelf, desk, dining room set, etc. By the time everything was said and done, my total furniture cost would’ve been close to $1000. Yikes!

“These are things you never knew you needed but at less than $2 each you load up on them anyway. You set out to buy a $40 coffee table but end up dropping $500 on everything from storage units to glassware. “They have this way of making you believe nothing is expensive,” says Bertille Faroult, a shopper at Ikea on the outskirts of Paris.” [link]

You know what I think? I think IKEA is the rich man’s Urban Outfitters. You poor peeps know what I mean. Rich kids looking to get that “thrift store/vintage” look but unwilling to buy something that has *gasp, been used by another person. It’s called recycling, kids. Get used to it.

Go to Uhuru. I happened to walk by it last week. I came out w/ a bookshelf. A mirror. Another bookshelf. Two chairs. Total cost? $100 and some change. The lovely salesperson, Lisa, helped me with everything. She took her time, answered all my questions. Even helped me with color schemes and styles. When I’m at IKEA, I usually end up circling aimless through its mazelike corridors without seeing someone to help me. Even throwing in delivery didn’t equal the cost of a single bookshelf I wanted from IKEA. Continue reading

“Thank God we left Pakistan”

My mother’s reaction upon seeing this video of three Taliban members beating a 17-year old girl from Pakistan’s Swat Valley region.

If possible, force yourself to watch the video in it entirety.

Spoiler alert * It’s hard to watch it without getting very very angry.
