As usual.
No offense to my desi peeps, but everyone knows Center City folks can be silly when it comes to their Indian food. And super silly when it comes to over-paying for everything.
Take the Tiffin folks’ new line of spices.
According to the Messy and Picky folks:
“If you’d like, you can still make the trek up to 710 W. Girard Ave and buy the same spices from the source, but as of March 2009, Foster’s is the exclusive retailer for Tiffin’s goods outside of their orange walls….However, we highly recommend getting some full meals from Tiffin itself — the malai kofta, in particular, is a must-try. Messy has never had any as good anywhere else in the world!”
I’m gonna ignore the “make the trek up to” because not everthing is Center City-centric (more on this later). And I’ve yet to try Tiffin’s menu.
Point is (in my opinion) you can buy those same spices at any Indian store for half the price.
I showed my mom the prices. She laughed.
Oh well. Designer Indian food. Applause for the innovation.
Next topic: Is Phillygrrl a hater?

that’s hilarious.
i go to the indo-pak grocery at 42 and walnut. It’s awesome. everything I need.
For those of us who don’t cook, where can one get an authentic Indo-Pak meal?
42 and Walnut rules!
Thank you! I’ve been laughing about this all day.
Hahahahahah!
Especially the roasted powders. I wouldn’t dare cook with pre-roasted powders. Hell, I never even knew of such a thing till now. I shudder at the thought. Shudder.
What a great way to get money off of poor hapless souls.
Jamie, I’m gonna go with my mom’s house, because honestly, you’re asking the wrong person. When I was a little kid, my mom never let us go to Indo-Pak restaurants. She said, “Anything they make, I can make better.”
Since then I’ve only been to a couple of Indian buffets in University City that homesick international students claim are “authentic.”
*Barfs.
I’ve heard Tiffin is a great place to go, I’ve yet to check it out myself. Cafe Spice also has a great reputation, but I’ve heard it’s pricey.
Like I said, my mom’s house :)
Or, you could always come to my house, all of you!
42nd and Walnut is great, my mom has been going there for years. Price have gone up, naturally, but for CC folks, it’s the best bet.
LT – I agree, it’s ingenious marketing. I applaud their innovation.
Thanks, Anil!
Do we need to make reservations?
