I didn’t go to prom

So every now and then I like to check in with my little sister and her high school friends. A couple of weeks ago a few of them went to one of those Fairy Godmother things, where a girl can pick out a prom dress and accessories without bankrupting her parents/herself. Which was pretty prudent of them. I was impressed. (I’m used to of high school kids who work at McDonald’s for at least two year’s in advance hoping against hope they can save the prerequiste $2000 to afford a limo rental, tailored dress, etc. ) The girls came back loaded with prom swag, having spent only $20 or so (okay who’s going to come up with a Fairy Godfather? Tux’s are expensive too.)

Along with all of the discounted prom stuff, however, came a lot of freebies from prom vendors. My sister presented me with a piece of paper. A prom checklist if you will of all the things a gal needs to do to get ready for the big day.

“Check it out,” she said. I did.

The third bullet point said “Start toning your body. Download fitness videos at seventeen.com/trainer.”

Ugh.

It went on to suggest, “Start a teeth-whitening regimen, like CrestWhitestrips, if you wish.”

Product placement. Fun times.

Read the entire document here. Guaranteed to make you want to kill Seventeen magazine’s editors/advertisers.

And if that doesn’t make you wince, check out this goldmine of stupid suggestions for suscpetible young women. (“Prom Don’t make a scene, you’ll mess up your make-up from crying.” PG will make a scene if she feels like it. So there.)

Fantastic. Glad my little sister and her friends know EXACTLY what to do on prom night.

  1. Since PG seems to be assigning herself Prom Etiquette Guru responsibilities here, I have a question regarding girl bullet point No. 21: (Do go to prom with a date who will pull out your chair at dinner.) If one’s date fails to do this, or, arguably, even worse, pulls the chair out so far that the girl winds up sitting on the floor, does that negate girl bullet point No. 38: (Don’t break up with your boyfriend on prom night…!!)?

    Inquiring minds etc., etc.

  2. wellthisisawkward

I didn’t go either, my mom said it was not out culture, but then my younger bros and sis got to go…heh

  3. Same here, WTIA.

Laughing at your comment, Doug. I wondered the same thing…

  4. there really isn’t a need for a fairy godfather, since guys typically rent the tux.
also, you forgot the requisite investment in an 8-ball, which is how we rolled in 1989…

  5. Trust me. I know EXACTLY what, and what not to do on prom night :) On the other hand, I’m not so sure about your sister =/ Lol. Jk.

But on a serious note, that prom checklist is ridiculous. I read it and can infer that I shouldn’t go to school on the day of prom. At 9 AM I’m supposed to “rise and shine” and get ready for my big day. Sorry, but I’ll actually be in school.

  6. Eight ball? What????

  7. Funny how that first link has a major typo.
Really? Prom is at 6.30 AM? :P

Goes to show how credible it is!
