Mr. Jones on fashion and fundraising for a good cause…
Phillygrrl asked me to be the fashion guy on the site and I have a strange weakness for theme tees, but this one has a legitimate purpose. Then check out the press release below and buy some tickets. Really, support a local institution….
When New Jersey native Drew Olanoff was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on May 9, he decided to blame his cancer for everything. Losing his keys, misplacing his wallet – any annoyance, obstacle, or tragedy in his life became an opportunity to beat up on cancer. He offered Twitter users the ability to do the same. Tweet using the tag #blamedrewscancer, and blame Drew’s cancer for it – whatever it is.
Since May, over 11,000 unique Twitter users have blamed Drew’s cancer, while Twitter-fueled events have raised over $10,000 for cancer-related charities.
Blame Drew’s Cancer has changed from a social networking trend into an extraordinary fundraising movement spanning the country. Events have been held in San Francisco and Philadelphia and been covered on CNN, Fox29, AOL Health, and in the Philadelphia City Paper.
On September 9, 2009, Blame Drew’s Cancer presents its biggest event yet: the first annual Blame-a-Thon, a 24-hour event and benefit concert to unite Philadelphia and a live audience on the web in blaming cancer for everything. All proceeds and donations from the Blame-a-Thon will go directly to LiveStrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (blame-a-thon.com).
The Blame-a-Thon will kick off with a midnight-to-noon party at Old City co-working space Independent’s Hall and continue with a noon-to-midnight benefit concert at the North Star Bar in Fairmount. The entire event will be streamed online by Live Stream (livestream.com).
The North Star Bar benefit concert includes:
• Goodnight Lights, featuring Jonah Delso, who opened for Coldplay in Philadelphia in 2008,
• Reed Kendall of Up the Chain, a Philly-based acoustic pop band featured this summer on the NBC 10 Show and 6ABC’s Tuned-In, and local artists including Thom McCarthy, Bamboo Houses, The Traded Series, Filmstar, High Kick, Dark Horse & The Carousels, Kill You In the Face, Christie Lynee, The Press, Elizabeth Seward, Swift Technique, and Billy Woodward & The Senders. The event will include catering from the Taco Bell Truck and Philadelphia-based Buttercream Cupcake Truck (www.buttercreamphiladelphia.com). From 4-8pm a DKMS Americas sponsored bone marrow registry will take place in the upstairs dining room.
The Independent’s Hall party will feature live tapings of local podcasts “2 Guys on Beer” and “Best Damn Tech Show,” and catering from Victory Beer , ChefAMe (www.openchefame.com) and La Colombe coffee. In addition, a DKMS Americas sponsored bone marrow registry will take place from 7am – 12pm.
Tickets for the North Star Bar portion of Blame-a-Thon are available for $15.
