Pool sends kids with the wrong complexion home

"Nope, get outta da pool, kids!"

"Nope, get outta da pool, kids!"

You’ve got to be kidding me! Check out this article that my Twitter pal @rbender posted:

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

“I heard this lady, she was like, ‘Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?’ She’s like, ‘I’m scared they might do something to my child,’” said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers’ first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

“When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool,” Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. “The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.”

*Splutters. It’s bad enough that many of Philly’s public pools have closed down. Now they’re keeping urban kids (whose parents have paid for the privilege of using this pool)  out of suburban pools as well? Ridiculous.

And the response from the club? Mind-boggling.

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

Hmm, guess the prez has to stay out of that pool.

Check out the statement on the pool’s website:

“we are sure that you’ll enjoy the fantastic property and welcoming community of the club…”

Oh, okay. So this welcoming community’s way of welcoming people  is to make little kids cry? Classy. Very classy.

And check out the ‘Membership‘ page.

“We combine a casual, friendly atmosphere with an emphasis on family.”

They should perhaps stress that this doesn’t necessarily include an emphasis on black families.

Yup, double-checked the ‘Rules of operation.’ Nothing in there about running out of the pool screaming if a colored kid touches water.

Okay, you guys know what to do. Give ‘em hell.

About these ads

Maybe I’m asking for it

But I joined this group, and although pretty sure it was impossible to inspire change from within, still had a good discussion with a group member, etc.

I mean I thought I did. I tried to start a discussion on the wall. I posted a link on the “Links” section, etc. I wanted a dialogue. I guess Mr. John Applegate doesn’t like dialogues. Perhaps the group was designed to be a fan group for his (many!) admirers. My mistake.I guess the admin of “Close the Borders NOW!” finally noticed there was a troublemaker in their midst (snark).

Well, I finally did it. I finally got kicked out of the group! My wall posts got deleted. As did my link. It’s like I was never a proud member of “Close the Borders NOW!” So much for fighting the system from within. Well, it’s his group. He can do what he likes.

My life is complete.

I hate people who hate immigrants

Makes me incredibly angry.

Like this Facebook group.

“I am so sick of people playing the blame game for the economic crisis that we’re are in. No it was not entirely Bush’s fault. Ok maybe he wasn’t one of the greatest president but he got us through some pretty tough times. But this is not a group about George W. Bush. That fact is that the moron Bill Clinton opened up free trade to China, causing the deflation of prices. Not only that, he took away all the jobs by doing this. Bush was just left with the mess that Clinton made. But the real problem at hand are these illegal immigrents coming in. They take all of our jobs, theydon’t have to pay taxes, or medicare. This is complete BULL and has to be stopped. Not only with the illegal hispanics but other immigrants coming from all around the world. For instance my sister is in pharmacy school and probably 90% of the student population is Indian. So either they are taking all of those jobs or drug companies (along with many others) are starting to outsource their companies in countries where they can hire employees for very cheap…again taking away all of our jobs. I say we close off our borders and reset our country because our situation is not going to get any better until we do something different. How about the United States worries about itself for a change before we go offering job opportunites to third world countries. I don’t want this group to come off looking like a bunch of racists or selfish people, but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.”

Comcastic!

No surprise here.

A $200 million race-discrimination lawsuit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia against a worldwide food-service provider that has a contract at the Comcast Center.

What would YOU do?

Note: Re-posted after declining the job offer.

Last night I was watching ABC’s “What Would YOU Do?” which used Milgram-type experiments to highlight human flaws, and heroics. The episode featured an actor dressed as a conservative Muslim woman wearing a headscarf who was refused service at a bakery by another actor. Customers in the the store either ignored the confrontation, in which the bakery ‘employee’ repeatedly verbally harassed the woman and refused her service. Some good folks stepped in and intervened while others supported the ‘employee’ in his belief that only ‘Americans’ who ‘dressed like Americans’ should get service. The majority, however, virtually ignored the exchange.
